Tightrope

review by Zach B.

Clint Eastwood is New Orleans detective Wes Block, a single father with two daughters. Block is on the trail of a serial skiller who kills young women - and soon it gets closer when he begins to kill prostitutes associated with Block. Soon, things reach a boiling point when Block's love interest and one of his daughters (Clint's real life daughter!) is threatened. Seems like Block is walking a tightrope...

Fun Fact: Richard Tuggle also wrote Clint Eastwood's 1979 hit "Escape From Alcatraz."

"Tightrope" is presented in a somewhat ugly 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. It obviously hasn't been cleaned up and shows: the film just reeks of grain and is filled with blemishes, scratches, dirt pieces - you name it, it's there and at a constant rate. Still, detail is decent and color saturation looks pretty good. There is also a tiny bit of edge enhancment, but at least fleshtones look nice.

The English Dolby Digital 5.1 remix is actually pretty strong and much better than I anticipated - dialogue is clear and easy to hear and doesn't sound distorted at all. The cool New Orleans music sounds quite excellent through the speakers while surrounds are active and strong - footsteps, flashbulbs going off and things that make the slightist bit of noise are on the track and added some nice life to the track - it really does a bring an atmosphere to the film - especially when things get gritty and violent. Fidelity is high and the dynamic range is strong. This is one of the more impressive 5.1 remixes I've heard in a long while. Also included are English closed captions, and a slew of subtitles. You can choose from Thai, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, Portuegese, English and French.

An anamorphic widescreen Theatrical Trailer and film highlights of Eastwood's career. Feh.

A decent presentation of a pretty decent Clint Eastwood movie - the price is right despite the lack of extras, so if you're a fan then enjoy.
