"Happy Days" has, uh... seen better days. As great as this show is, unfortunately, these transfers (in 1.33:1 full screen, of course) are pretty awful. The third season is really grainy, and are downright messy with lots of blemishes, dirt pieces and scratches. It is pretty distracting. Not helping matters are the off-fleshtones, and high contrast resulting in plenty of noise. Detail is a bit wishy-washy, and color saturation isn't too impressive. Sit on it, Paramount.

Slightly better are the English mono tracks. But don't get your hopes up: these aren't thrilling, either. Which is fine, given this is how they were recorded and aired on television. Fidelity is pretty good, but everything else is even-level and gets spit out together: the dialogue, sound effects, music and laugh track. All the sound elements sound clear though, and I didn't hear any distortion (apparently these were "restored). In all, it suits the material as intended. English closed captions are also included.

Nothing.

It's good to have "Happy Days" on DVD, even if the episode transfers aren't so hot and there aren't any extras to speak of. (Not to mention some music changes.) Still, this is a classic sitcom in a finely formed season. If you're a fan and don't mind the DVD presentation, then feel free to have some fun with Fonzie and the gang.
