"Legally" First
In a surprise upset this weekend, the teen and liked
comedy Legally Blonde opened in first with 20.4
million. MGM has been doing well with openings this year,
and I suspect good word of mouth from the previous week's
sneak preview did help out. In second was the method actor
caper The Score with 19 million and Cats &
Dogs in third with 12 million.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, the big screen
debut of the popular game series, failed to attract much of
an audience taking in 11.4 million during this weekend and
19 million in total since it's Wednesday debut. This must be
disappointing to many and Columbia/Tri-Star, where the film
has had high costs - some of that being for the creation of
the production company Square Pictures (the film division of
Square who developed the video game series). The film was
praised for its technological advancements and animation,
but was criticized in the story department.
Scary Movie 2 raked in 9.6 million, and it's quite
clear it won't be big as the first. The Fast And The
Furious was sixth with 8.1 million while Dr. Dolittle
2 raked in 7.5 million for seventh place. Kiss Of The
Dragon was eight with 6 million, and A.I. Artifical
Intelligence made 5.2 million for ninth place. I doubt
it will even cross 100 million, and this is definatly a box
office disappointment this summer. Finally, Lara Croft:
Tomb Raider took tenth with 3.9 million.
Next week: Jurassic Park III and America's
Sweethearts. Who and what will stack up? Stay tuned...
